Swartkop Challenge Competition Rules [Updated: April 2007]

  1. The team shall be declared to the Organiser on the form provided which shall contain the names of each team member and be signed by the Team Captain no less than two hours before their scheduled start time. The team shall be a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 20.
The team may have in addition a maximum of two leaders who may only touch the gun or the gear during the timed run to maintain proper organisation of the cables, shackles etc for the security and proper organisation of the rig. The team Captain may be a member of the team or a leader. The declaration will be deemed an acceptance of the rules of the competition and an entitlement to prize money. One of the leaders may fire the gun at the completion of the run.
  2. The competition will be against the clock and the fastest team to draw the gun from the bottom of the slide to the top finishing line and fire will be the winner. The restrictions of gear to simulate authenticity require the gun to be secured at the strong point half way up the hill so that the hauling wire can be secured and the drag ropes demounted and installed at the top of the hill before the gun is raised up the second part of the slide. There will be a fixed strop to secure the gun at the Intermediate Fixing Point (IFP).
  3. At the start of the competition the gun will be with its trail on the start line towards the Slide, with the bight of cable led through the block on the gun trail. The team will be at the top of the slide behind the start and finish line.
The starting signal shall be the firing of a gun. At the start the crew to maintain the gun (the gun team) will descend the hill and the hauling crew will attach the drag rope to the end of the first cable.
  4. Marshals provided by the organisers shall be present at the foot of the slide, the IFP and at the top fixing point (TFP). The marshal at the TFP will be in communication with the Start and the IFP. Marshalls shall check secure attachment of the gear provided (all shackles to be screwed home ) and have the authority to control any team or to stop a run.
  5. The team shall install the cable and draw ropes and haul the gun to the IFP where it is to be secured to the strop provided by a shackle; The marshal at the IFP shall clear that the gun is securely attached so that the Gun Team Leader (GTL) can signal to the Draw Team Leader (DTL) to ease and release the draw cable which is to be secured at the bottom of the slide to a fixed point (cable) which will be assisted by the marshalls.
  6. The haul crew ascend the slide and attach the drag rope to the second draw cable and must have tension on the cable before the IFP strop is cast off. This must be inspected by the TFP Marshall who will inform the IFP marshall when the draw team are ready at the top so that the strop may be cast off. (It is virtually impossible to cast off the strop unless the tension is on the draw cable) The gun is then hauled to the TFP by the haul team descending the hill until the tackle is of no further advantage but not before the indicated line at the top of the slide, when they may ascend the hill and leave the tackle in situ. The haul crew will then ascend to the top of the hill to run the gun forward to the finishing line where it shall be turned and the wheels placed on the finishing line. All the team must be present within 2m and behind the line when the gun shall be fired.
  7. The finishing time is the time of the firing.
  8. Prize money will be awarded in the order in which the the shortest times are achieved. Medallions will be awarded to all team members competing.
  9. All members of the team shall be present at the top of the hill at the firing. Failure of any team member to be present will incur a 5 minute time penalty. Should any injury or accident occur the team run may be abandoned and another run attempted on submission of a new entry fee and declaration form with substitutes in the team.
  10. The team shall assist the organisers as directed to enable the gun to be lowered to the base of the slide and be ready for the next team. The procedure to lower the gun is the reverse of the raising drill except that a vehicle may be used to restrain the descent of the gun.
  11. Equipment. All gear and equipment provided by the Event shall be properly used as instructed and damage from improper use shall be the responsibility of the team concerned. Proper and supervised drills shall be carried out for mishaps, capsizes etc.
  12. Dress: Teams may wear sponsored clothing of their choice but dress must include footwear, long trousers and shirt.
  13. Entry Fee: Each Team shall pay an entry fee to register the team which shall be R 500 for each run.
  14. Prize: The competition carries cash prizes for all teams that draw the gun from the bottom of the hill to the top and fire a round from the proscribed position during a timed run. Full rules are available from the organiser whose decision will be final. A maximum of six runs shall be held on the Sunday.
  15. Protest: Protest of any infringement may be lodged within 20 minutes of the completion of the team’s event by Team Captains only. The decision of the judge and marshals shall be final.
  16. Flags: Flags are requested but may only be flown at the Marquee on poles supplied by the Organisers. Unit identification pennants no greater than 40cm in any dimension may be carried on the gun or the personnel during the competition.
