Swartkop Challenge               Competition Rules  2011

General:   The spirit of this extreme sport competition is contained in the challenge of getting the gun up the hill as inspired by those in 1900. This significant achievement should be the reward for all competitors and the accolade of shorter times is secondary. All teams are encouraged to be generous in support for their fellow competitors. All teams are encouraged to be generous in support for their fellow competitors.
The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry to the competition to any team or individual displaying unsporting conduct.

1.  The team shall be declared to the Organiser on the Team Declaration form no less than two hours before their scheduled start time. The team shall have a maximum weight of 1900kg. An allowance of 2.5kg for clothing is added. The Team will be weighed-in before the start.
The team may have in addition a maximum of two leaders to co-ordinate the efforts of the Pulling Team and the Gun Team. They may only touch the gun or the gear during the timed run to maintain proper organisation of the cables, shackles etc for the security and proper organisation of the rig. NB cables passing under the wheels are almost impossible to pull, and get damaged. Leaders may organise running gear with the marshals.
The declaration will be deemed an acceptance of the rules of the competition and an entitlement to prize money.
2.    The competition will be against the clock with teams competing one at a time using the same gun, hillside and equipment. The time is from the complete team leaving the start line to the complete team being present with the gun at the same line. The restrictions of gear for authenticity require the gun to be secured at the strong point half way up the hill. The first end of the hauling wire is secured, the drag rope is demounted and installed at the top of the hill, then the gun is raised up the second part of the slide. There will be a fixed strop to secure the gun at the Intermediate Fixing Point (IFP).
3.      At the start of the competition the gun will be at the bottom of the hill with its trail towards the Slide, with the bight of cable led through the block on the gun trail. The complete team will be at the top of the slide behind the start and finish line.
The starting signal shall be the firing of a starting gun. At the start, the gun team descend the hill and the pulling team attach the drag rope to the end of the first cable.
 4.      Marshals provided by the organisers shall be present at the foot of the slide, the IFP and at the top fixing point (TFP). The marshal at the TFP will be in communication with the Start and the IFP. Marshals shall check secure attachment of the gear provided (all shackles to be screwed home) and have the authority to control any team or to stop a run. Secondary timekeepers will record such official stops which shall be deducted from the overall time.
5.        The team shall install the cable and draw rope and haul the gun to the IFP where it is to be secured to the strop provided, by a shackle; The marshal at the IFP shall clear that the gun is securely attached so that the Gun Team Leader (GTL) can signal to the Pull Team Leader (PTL) to ease and release the draw cable which is then secured at the bottom of the slide to a fixed point (cable) which will be assisted by the marshals.
6.         The Pull crew ascend the slide and attach the drag rope to the second draw cable and must have tension on the cable before the IFP strop is cast off. This must be inspected by the TFP Marshall who will inform the IFP marshal when the draw team are ready at the top so that the strop may be cast off. (It is virtually impossible to cast off the strop unless tension is taken on the draw cable). The gun is then hauled to the TFP by the Pull Team descending the hill until the tackle is of no further advantage, when they ascend the hill with the draw rope, leaving the tackle in situ. The tackle may not be removed from the gun before the gun has passed the safety line. The Pull crew ascend to the top of the hill with the draw rope, attach it to the gun, and run the gun forward to the finishing line where it shall be turned after the wheels have passed the finishing line.  A member of the team or a leader shall fire the gun at the completion of the run. All the team must be present within the length of the gun when the gun is fired.
7.   All members of the team must be present by the gun at the firing.   Failure of any team member to be present will incur a 3 minute time penalty. Should any injury or accident occur the team run may be abandoned and another run attempted on submission of a new entry fee and declaration form with substitutes in the team. No other substitution is allowed.
8.    Prize money All teams completing a timed run will receive prize money. The sponsors will determine the additional purse for the first three teams. Medallions will be awarded to all team members competing.
9.     The team shall assist the organisers as directed to enable the gun to be lowered to the base of the slide and be ready for the next team. The procedure to lower the gun requires it to be steered accurately using the ropes attached, and a cable led to a strong point on the summit which restrains the descent of the gun.
10.   The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry to the competition to any team that has not performed adequately on the practice day.
11.    Equipment.           All gear and equipment provided by the Event shall be properly used as instructed and damage from improper use shall be the responsibility of the team concerned. Proper and supervised drills shall be carried out for mishaps, capsizes etc.
12.     Dress: Teams may wear sponsored clothing of their choice but dress must include footwear, long trousers and shirts.
13.     Entry Fee:              Each Team shall pay an entry fee to register the team which shall be R500 for each run. Together with the entry form, this will entitle the team to prize money
14.     Protest:  Protest of any infringement may be lodged within 10 minutes of the completion of the subject team’s run, by Team Captains only and on deposit of R200 in cash. The decision of the judges shall be final.

15.     Flags:                     Flags are requested but may only be flown at the tentage or on poles supplied by the Organisers. Unit identification pennants no greater than 40cm in any dimension may be carried on the gun during the competition
